Portland Employers: Be Aware of Proposed Paid Sick Leave Ordinance

The Portland City Council recently held a public hearing to discuss an ordinance that will provide employees with up to 40 hours of paid sick leave annually. The current proposal applies to employers with six or more employees and, if passed, will go into effect on January 1, 2014. A task force is currently considering the proposal and will look at, among other issues: exemptions for employees earning higher hourly rates; exemptions for certain kinds of businesses; tracking hours worked; and application of the ordinance to employees who work only part time in the City of Portland and/or are employed by a State of Washington employer, but work in the City of Portland.  The next hearing before the City Counsel is scheduled to take place on February 27, 2013.  The agenda for the next task force meeting can be found here: http://www.portlandonline.com/fritz
