We recently posted about the City of Portland’s new paid sick leave ordinance and the terms and conditions under which employers with six or more employees must offer paid sick leave. We have also begun drafting employment policies that comply with the ordinance in anticipation of the January 1, 2014 effective date for the ordinance. Yesterday, Commissioner Fritz’ office indicated that employers should wait until July 2013 to take action, because that is when it is anticipated that the administrative rules for the ordinance will be adopted.
We will continue to monitor this situation. In the interim, employers may adopt policies that comply with the ordinance as enacted, but should be mindful that the administrative rules may alter procedures to be followed to comply with the ordinance.
