$475,000 Punitive Damage Award for Failure to Promote

Here is a tip: it is a bad idea to promote an unqualified male employee and tell him to keep his promotion a secret from the qualified female employee who applied for the job.  It is also a bad idea for a manager with decision-making power regarding promotions to announce that he would never put a woman in a particular position.   Unfortunately for Exel, Inc., those were some of the facts presented to the jury in a female employee’s lawsuit alleging that she was not promoted because of her gender.  Based on these facts, the jury awarded the employee $25,000 in compensatory damages and tagged Exel, Inc. for $475,000 in punitive damages.  http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/newsroom/release/6-11-13b.cfm
