A reminder to Washington employers, paid family medical leave benefits became available to employees yesterday, January 1, 2020 (payroll deductions should have started on January 1, 2019).
To apply for paid leave, a eligible employee is required to provide their employer with at least 30 days advance written notice for planned medical leave or written notice as soon as possible for unexpected leave. Once an employer receives notice that an employee is taking time off for more than seven consecutive days of work for their own serious health condition or to care for a family member, the employer has 5 days to notify the employee that they may qualify for paid leave (a form notice is below). After the employee receives notice from their employer, the employee must obtain medical certification from their health care provider to establish the need for leave (a form to use for medical certification is below), and then must apply for benefits (https://paidleave.wa.gov/apply-now/ ). Once an employee has applied, the employee must submit weekly benefits claims (which can be done online or over the phone, depending upon how the employee submitted their original application for paid leave).
